About International Academy of Music Hobart
The International Academy of Music Hobart (IAM) was established in 2016 by Lyndon Ellis, the owner and Director who created a school with a fresh new approach to teaching and learning.
The school builds on 60+ years of quality music education; employs seven teachers, connects with 300+ students aged from 6 months to 102 who learn in individual and group classes.
IAM is Tasmania’s only licensed Encore Academy and Microwave your Music provider in Rock/Pop/Vocal lessons.
Offering 24 level options from the highly respected Encore International Music Curriculum.
IAM is the only school in Hobart offering the Internationally recognised SCSM Concert Exams.
Concert exams with a difference
IAM is the only school in Hobart offering International SCSM Concert Exams for all levels, all ages, and all instruments, including vocal, musicianship, and theory.
SCSM Concert Exams are for all styles, all levels and are Tasmanian Department of Education approved, counting towards your TSL!
What makes our exams different?
Instead of the daunting experience of playing solo in an empty room in front of an examiner, students perform their selected pieces (any instrument or vocals) in an encouraging concert environment with invited friends and family as their audience.
They are available to ALL music students studying anywhere and with any method.
Microwave your Music
Microwave your Music (MYM) is an innovative approach to teaching music that enables students to play and enjoy their favourite songs in just a few lessons.
The program was created by Lyndon Ellis over several years and has been developed into a comprehensive lesson plan that suits all ages.

There are many ways that IAM Hobart is different but the biggest is the way we approach teaching music.
Focusing on learning music as a language rather than the traditional dots and squiggles & supported by the latest MRI & brain research our lessons are far from the traditional lessons you might remember.
All our teachers are musically trained, they’re all registered SCSM teachers, and IAM is a member of the TMTA. We are the only school in Hobart providing SCSM international concert exams.

We provide group classes for children from around 6 months of age right through to adulthood.
